Grapefruit recipes: Try my Sweet Grapefruit & Mango Smoothie!

Grapefruit recipes, in my opinion, aren't nearly popular enough. This deliciously tart citrus fruit is one of my personal favorites, and the star of this grapefruit recipe, which I call my Sweet Grapefruit & Mango Smoothie.

I'm dedicating this recipe to Deb Perelman, whose jaw droppingly gorgeous food photography over at her blog, www.smittenkitchen.com, was a huge inspiration to me in the creation of this website. Like me, Deb loves the fabulous grapefruit!

My grandmother was a grapefruit fan, too. I have memories of visiting her as a child and always begging for a glass of the cold unsweetened juice she kept in the frig.

This is my modern twist, using fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice...

Grapefruit recipes: Sweet Grapefruit & Mango Smoothie:

Grapefruit recipes

To make this grapefruit recipe, you will need:

Fresh-squeezed juice from 3 grapefruits (equal to 3 cups of juice)*

Flesh of 1 mango

2 frozen bananas (simply peel, break into 2 or 3 pieces and stick in your freezer before you go to bed at night. In the morning, voila!)

Always squeeze your own juice!

Fresh is always best. As soon as a fruit is juiced, it rapidly begins to lose its enzymes and vitamins. Within half an hour, they're gone. To get the nutritional benefits from juice, drink it as soon as you squeeze it!

I got this electric citrus juicer at my local kitchen supply store for $14:

Squeezing the grapefruit juice for this recipe will take less than 5 minutes. Cut each grapefruit in half, then grind it into the top of the citrus juicer.

The container will slowly fill with juice, like so:

Fresh-squeezed juice from 3 grapefruits will make approximately 3 cups of juice.

Grapefruit recipes: Directions for making Sweet Grapefruit & Mango Smoothie:

1) Pour three cups of fresh-squeezed juice into your blender.

2) Add flesh of 1 mango and 2 frozen bananas.

*Important: For maximum flavor, make sure your bananas are fully ripened with lots of brown spots before you freeze them. They should look like this:

3) Once all ingredients are in the blender, blend until it's very smooth and creamy.

Pour it into a nice big glass and enjoy. Easy breakfast recipes like this one are such a treat!
